Gymnema sylvestre

Gymnema sylvestre is a climbing plant native to India with a long history of use in Ayurvedic herbal traditions. It is especially popular in herbal blends designed to support healthy metabolism and balanced wellness.

Traditionally Used For:
• Supporting healthy glucose metabolism
• Supporting metabolic wellness
• Healthy appetite and craving support
• Digestive wellness
• Traditional Ayurvedic wellness blends

Flavor:
Earthy, slightly bitter and mildly astringent.

How to Use in Tea:
Use approximately 1 teaspoon of dried gymnema leaf per 8 ounces of hot water. Steep for 5–10 minutes, strain and enjoy. Because of its naturally bitter flavor, gymnema is often easier to enjoy when blended with other herbs.

Pairs Well With:
Cinnamon, ginger, green tea, tulsi, hibiscus, fenugreek, peppermint and spearmint.

Blending Tip:
For a balanced metabolic wellness tea, try combining gymnema with cinnamon, ginger and tulsi. Peppermint or spearmint can also help soften its naturally bitter flavor.

Interesting Herbal Note:
Gymnema is traditionally known as gurmar, a name often translated as “sugar destroyer.” Compounds in the leaf can temporarily affect the perception of sweetness, which is one reason the herb has such an interesting history in traditional wellness practices.

Caution:
Gymnema may affect blood glucose levels and may increase the effects of diabetes medications. Anyone taking insulin or blood-sugar-lowering medications should consult a healthcare professional before use. Avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless directed by a qualified healthcare professional. Long-term safety has not been well established.
