Hops

Humulus lupulus

Hops are best known for their use in brewing, but they also have a long history of use in traditional herbal teas. Their strong, earthy bitterness makes them especially useful in nighttime and relaxation-focused herbal blends.

Traditionally Used For:
• Relaxation and unwinding
• Evening and bedtime herbal blends
• Supporting a calm nighttime routine
• Digestive-style bitter blends

Flavor:
Strong, bitter, earthy, slightly floral and herbaceous.

How to Use in Tea:
Because hops are naturally quite bitter, a little goes a long way. Start with ½ teaspoon of dried hops per 8 ounces of hot water. Steep for about 5–10 minutes, strain, and adjust to taste. Hops are often more enjoyable when blended with milder or naturally sweet herbs.

Pairs Well With:
Chamomile, lemon balm, lavender, passionflower, skullcap, valerian, mint, oat tops and rose petals.

Blending Tip:
Use hops as a smaller part of a blend rather than the main ingredient. Lemon balm, chamomile or mint can help soften their naturally bitter flavor.

Other Uses:
Hops can also be used in herbal sachets, dream pillows and aromatic herbal blends.

Caution:
Hops may promote drowsiness. Use caution when combining with alcohol, sedating medications or other strongly relaxing herbs. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding or if you take medications.
