Horehound

Marrubium vulgare

Horehound is a strongly bitter, aromatic herb with a long history of traditional herbal use. It is especially popular in seasonal herbal teas, throat-comfort blends and traditional digestive bitters.

Traditionally Used For:
• Respiratory wellness
• Throat-soothing herbal blends
• Seasonal wellness teas
• Digestive support
• Traditional bitter and appetite-support blends

Flavor:
Very bitter, earthy and slightly minty with an herbal finish.

How to Use in Tea:
Start with ½–1 teaspoon dried horehound per 8 ounces of hot water. Steep for 5–10 minutes, strain and sweeten if desired. Because horehound is naturally very bitter, it is usually best used as part of a blend rather than by itself.

Pairs Well With:
Peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, mullein, marshmallow root, licorice root, ginger, thyme, elderflower and rose hips.

Blending Tip:
Pair horehound with mint, honey or naturally sweeter herbs to balance its strong bitterness. It works especially well as a small addition to seasonal respiratory-style herbal blends.

Other Uses:
Horehound has traditionally been used in herbal syrups, lozenges, candies and bitters.

Caution:
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established. For medicinal-style use, white horehound is generally recommended for adults and adolescents over age 12. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use if you take medications or have a medical condition.
